GS1 Digital Link: the QR code for the product passport

What a GS1 Digital Link is, how GTIN, batch and serial number appear in the QR code and why the standard matters.

The product passport is opened via a QR code on the product, the label or the packaging. So that checkout systems, retailer scanners and authorities can read the code as well, DPP Creator uses the GS1 Digital Link standard as soon as the product has a GTIN (EAN).

How the address is built

  • …/01/{GTIN}: the product model.
  • …/01/{GTIN}/10/{batch}: a specific batch.
  • …/01/{GTIN}/21/{serial number}: an individual item.

Benefits

  • One code for consumers and trade: a smartphone camera and a scanner lead to the same passport.
  • The address stays valid for the whole product life, even if you extend the passport later.
  • Without a GTIN, DPP Creator creates a short, unique address that you can later switch to a GS1 Digital Link.

Print the QR code at least 1.5 × 1.5 cm with a white border and test it with several smartphones before printing.
