What is a Digital Product Passport?
The DPP explained in two minutes: what it is for, what it contains and who can see it.
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a digital profile of a product. It is accessed through a data carrier on the product – usually a QR code – and contains information about origin, materials, environmental impact, repair and disposal.
The legal basis is the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781). Which information is mandatory is set by the European Commission for each product group in separate legal acts. For batteries, the Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 governs the “battery passport”.
Who sees what?
- Consumers and retailers see the public information.
- Workshops, recyclers and authorities can additionally see information marked “legitimate interest”, e.g. dismantling instructions.
- Internal information (e.g. purchase prices) is never published.
What does DPP Creator do?
DPP Creator gives you a list of the required information for each product group with explanations, checks completeness, creates a permanently valid QR code and a signed public passport page in several languages.
DPP Creator is not a substitute for legal advice. For binding information about your obligations, contact your chamber of commerce, trade association or a testing body.
